Simmons was a member of The Force before co-founding Run-D.M.C. with Darryl McDaniels (“D.M.C”) and Jason Mizell (“Jam Master Jay”). In 1983, Run-D.M.C. signed with Profile Records and released the single “It’s Like That/Sucker MCs,” followed by their self-titled first album on March 27, 1984.

“Run-D.M.C.” peaked at #14 on the “Billboard” Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in 1985, and the group’s second album, “King of Rock,” peaked at #12.

Run-D.M.C. then released the 3x Platinum “Raising Hell” (1986), which peaked at #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and #3 on the “Billboard” 200 chart; the album was also nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Performance By a Duo Or Group with Vocal.

The group’s multi-platinum album was followed by “Tougher Than Leather” (1988), “Back from Hell” (1990), “Down with the King” (1993), and “Crown Royal” (1994). (2001). Mizell was murdered in 2002, causing Run-D.M.C. to disband.

Throughout their nearly 20-year career, Run-D.M.C. recorded several famous songs, including “Christmas in Hollis” (1987), “Run’s House” (1988), and “Down with the King” (1993), and their 1986 rendition of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” earned Platinum and peaked at #4 on the “Billboard” Hot 100 list.

The trio set many hip-hop records, including becoming the first act to grace the cover of “Rolling Stone” magazine and have music videos air on MTV, and their album “Raising Hell” was the genre’s first multi-platinum record.

In 2004, Run-D.M.C. was ranked #48 on “Rolling Stone’s” list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and MTV and VH1 both declared them the greatest hip-hop group/artist of all time in 2007.

Solo Career

Simmons’ solo album, “Distortion,” was published in 2005, and his single “Mind on the Road” can be heard in the computer game “Madden NFL 06.” That same year, he was featured on the track “Song 4 Lovers” by Liberty X, a British pop band.

In 2002, Joseph appeared on the game program “The Weakest Link,” finishing third; this “Rap Stars” episode also included Jermaine Dupri, Nate Dogg, and Xzibit.

The Simmons family first appeared on the reality show “Run’s House” in 2005, which aired 59 episodes over six seasons.
