Phylicia Ayers-Allen was born in Houston, Texas on June 19, 1948. Her mother, Vivian Ayers, is an artist, poet, dramatist, academic, and publisher nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Orthodontist Andrew Arthur Allen was her father. Her siblings are jazz musician brother Tex (Andrew Arthur Allen Jr.), actor, choreographer, and director sister Debbie Allen, and Charlotte, North Carolina-based real estate financier brother Hugh Allen.

Phylicia’s parents split when she was six years old. Several years later, her mother relocated with her two sisters to Mexico to avoid discrimination in the United States.The girls acquired a command of the Spanish language.

Later, Ayers-Allen attended Howard University and graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She was initiated at that time into the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Rashad directed a revival of August Wilson’s Fences at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey, at the beginning of 2014. It earned mostly favorable reviews. In late 2016, she directed a critically acclaimed Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom performance at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.

As part of the Dustin Lance Black miniseries When We Rise, Rashad portrays Bishop Yvette A. Flunder, leader of The City of Refuge Church in San Francisco, California, in 2017. Her visit on the broadcast highlighted the church’s alleged compassion, the dedication of its leadership, and the caring home the church gives to ministers in the difficult, predominantly African-American community of San Francisco.

In the 2020 Pixar film Soul, Rashad provides the voice of Libba Gardner, the mother of Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx).

In 1972, Rashad married William Lancelot Bowles Jr., a dentist. William Lancelot Bowles III, their only child, was born the following year. The couple divorced in 1975. Victor Willis and Rashad got married (original lead singer of the Village People in 1978; they had met during the run of The Wiz). In 1982, they got divorced.

On December 14, 1985, she wed Ahmad Rashad for the third time. He had been a wide receiver in the NFL and a sportscaster. She married him for the third time, and he gave her his last name.

In 1985, he proposed to her during the pregame show for a nationally broadcast football game between the New York Jets and the Detroit Lions. On December 11, 1986, their daughter Condola Phylea Rashad was born in New York. She kept the last name Rashad after the divorce in early 2001.
