She started as a jazz pianist in the 1970s and later became well-known for her work as a studio musician and session player. Preclusion, her self-titled debut album, was released in 1975.

She released four additional albums the following ten years after the success of the album. Rushen transitioned into songwriting and production in the 1980s, working with musicians like Whitney Houston, Herbie Hancock, and The Pointer Sisters.

Additionally, she wrote the music for “The Goonies” and “Fame,” among other movies and television programs.

Rushen oversaw the music for the Grammy Awards and Soul Train Music Awards in the 1990s.
