Max Azria Overview

Early Life

Max Azria, born in Sfax, Tunisia as the youngest of six children to a Sephardic Jewish family, was surrounded by learning from a young age.

After his family moved to Paris in 1963, he furthered his education in the south of France before joining his brother Serge in establishing successful women’s clothing lines such as Joie, Current/Elliott and Equipment.

Career

After spending 11 inspiring years crafting exquisite designs for women’s clothing in Paris, Azria moved to the sunny city of Los Angeles in 1981 and created Jess – a revolutionary series of fashion boutiques offering women the latest in chic apparel.

In 1989, Azria released BCBG Max Azria, a collection inspired by the popular French phrase “bon chic, bon genre,” expressing the essence of good style and attitude in the City of Light – Paris.

In 1998, Azria was honored for their success in providing designer fashion at budget-friendly prices when they were welcomed into the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). 1996 saw the unveiling of the BCBG Max Azria Runway collection at the prestigious New York Fashion Week.

Max Azria boasted two designer collections with his namesake – Max Azria Atelier and Max Azria. Making its first appearance in February 2004, Max Azria Atelier was a collection of exquisite couture gowns made to fit the likes of Hollywood’s elite, often seen at red carpet events.

Notable celebrities such as Sharon Stone, Halle Berry, Fergie and Alicia Keys have all donned the label for their moment in the spotlight. In February 2006, Max Azria stepped onto the catwalk at New York Fashion Week with a dazzling new ready-to-wear collection, introducing an undeniably stylish aesthetic.

Later that year, the company acquired G+G Retail, allowing them to add the acclaimed G+G and Rave brands to its catalog. In 2009, none other than Angelina Jolie stepped out in Max Azria, donning the label to the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Critics Choice Awards.

In 1998, Max Azria made history when he became the first American designer to acquire the iconic French couturier Hervé Léger. Fast-forward to 2007, and Azria gave the label a facelift, introducing his own designs, which quickly became a hit with celebrities and fashion-forward individuals around the globe.

Max Azria caused a stir in the Fall of 2008 when he presented the triple-show BCBG Max Azria Runway, Max Azria and Hervé Léger by Max Azria collections at New York Fashion Week, a groundbreaking feat for an American designer.

In 2008, Azria debuted a chic young contemporary collection called BCBGeneration. One year later, they partnered with Miley Cyrus to create a Walmart-exclusive line titled Miley Cyrus & Max Azria. To top it off, they also crafted apparel for Cyrus’ 2009 American tour.

In 2016, Azria departed BCBG as the company faced financial difficulties. Sadly, BCBG Max Azria was forced to declare bankruptcy in 2017, eventually being bought by Marquee Brands and Global Brands Group.

On May 31, 2017, ZappLight welcomed renowned fashion designer Max Azria as their new CEO and partner in both the company and its parent co Clean Concept LLC.

Having a passion for entrepreneurship, it seemed only natural for the 68-year-old to launch a startup rather than retire. Enter ZappLight: a revolutionary “2-in-1” LED light bulb and bug zapper, set to disrupt the bug zapper industry that has remained largely unchanged since the 80s.

Introducing the ZappLight – the revolutionary new bulb that combines an LED light that lures in bugs and mosquitoes, as well as the zapping technology of the past!

Not just an ordinary bulb, the ZappLight is easily installed in any existing outdoor light fixture – so homeowners can now enjoy bug-free illumination outside their homes!
