What is Mario Lemieux’s Net Worth and Salary 2023?
As of 2023, Mario Lemieux’s net worth is estimated to be $200 million. The former professional ice hockey player has accrued his wealth through his successful NHL career and various business ventures.
He is widely considered one of the greatest players of all time, and his legacy will continue to earn him money long after he has retired from the sport.
Mario Lemieux Overview
Early Life
On October 5, 1965, Mario Lemieux was born in Montreal, Quebec. He only started skating when he was three years old. When Lemieux was six years old, his parents had to give him the go-ahead to participate in organized hockey. He took the field for the Verdun Maple Leafs for the first time.
The first goal Lemieux ever scored came against the Rosemont team. He was the leading scorer in the Quebec Pee-Wee Hockey League by the age of eleven.
Career
Early Career
Mario joined the Penguins in the thick of a scandal. He and his agent had been at a standstill with the owners, unable to come to an agreement that would satisfy all parties.
Mario notoriously declined to shake the general manager’s hand or take a picture with the team jersey after being selected by the team.
The Penguins were in serious financial problems when Lemieux joined, so the controversy persisted. When Mario joined the squad, they were also having a very bad season and had been without a postseason victory for two years.
It nearly seemed impossible for Mario’s NHL debut to be real. He took the puck off Hall of Fame defender Ray Brouque and scored right away with his first NHL shot. He was the inaugural rookie to win the Most Valuable Player award at the end of the season.
Despite missing seven games in his first season, Mario achieved 100 points, and he kept getting better over the following few years, even though the Penguins still struggled to make the playoffs.
He participated in the 1987 Canada Cup with the Canadian national team, playing with legends like Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and Paul Coffey
Later, he claimed that this had been a “tremendous learning experience” that had prepared him for success in the coming years. Mario first won the league scoring championship in the 1987–88 season after accumulating 168 points.
The only player to have come close to Gretzky’s average of over 200 points each season during this time was Lemieux. The Penguins qualified for the playoffs for the first time in seven years in 1988–89 when they finished the season with 199 points.
In a game against the New Jersey Devils that season, Mario recorded 8 points, including 5 goals in each of the five conceivable “game scenarios.” He is the sole player to have achieved this.
By 1990, Mario Lemieux’s injuries were beginning to take a toll. He missed 21 games in the 1989–1990 season (and still managed to finish fourth in league points). A herniated disc finally developed as a result of an old back problem getting worse.
He underwent surgery to address the problem, but he missed 50 games the next season as a result. With an eye toward the Stanley Cup, the Penguins made several promising new player acquisitions during this window.
Lemieux finally joined the squad again and helped the Penguins win the Stanley Cup for the first time.
Due to various injuries, Lemieux missed more games in the 1991–92 campaign, but the Penguins still managed to win a second Stanley Cup without their star player.
The Penguins had a promising start to the 1993 campaign when Mario revealed he had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Radiation treatments ruined his ability to play. However, he returned to the NHL the day after his radiation treatment was over. After contributing a goal and an assist for the Philadelphia Flyers, he received a standing ovation from the crowd.
His battle with illness strangely didn’t affect how well he played; he was playing some of his finest hockey ever.
Mario Lemieux signed a $500,000 endorsement contract with Nike in 2000 and then returned to the NHL as a player.
He didn’t participate in many games but consistently had the highest points-per-game average from the beginning of the seasons until his ultimate retirement in 2006.
Team Ownership
In 1999, The Penguins filed for bankruptcy. Mario Lemieux was one of their largest debtors. Mario owed the Penguins $32.5 million in deferred pay.
Lemieux proposed to convert $20 million of the $32.5 million in salary he owed into ownership shares to prevent the organization from going bankrupt. Additionally, he was allowed to assemble a fresh group of financiers to purchase the entire chain.
Mario then joined forces with billionaire investors Ron Burkle ($20 million contribution), John Surma ($2 million contribution), and others to purchase the complete team for $107 million.
The franchise was valued at $132 million at the time. Twenty years later, the team’s minimum book value was $600 million. The team may be worth up to $750 million. Mario’s cut would be worth $187.5 million at that price.
He was the first NHL player to possess a majority stake in his previous franchise. He first assumed the roles of president, CEO, and chairman but later gave up the first two roles.
Retirement
Mario Lemieux and his ownership group immediately tried to sell the Pittsburgh Penguins after his retirement in 2006. The transaction, however, failed, and he was compelled to keep the team.
Then he handled the building of the Consol Energy Center and an agreement that guaranteed the Pittsburgh Penguins would remain there for at least 30 years.
The next year, in 2009, Lemieux led the group to a second Stanley Cup victory—his first as an owner. Despite the Penguins’ success under Lemieux’s ownership, he kept looking about selling the franchise throughout the ensuing weeks.
Then, in 2016 and 2017, they won back-to-back Stanley Cup titles. Mario is still the only athlete whose name appears on the Stanley Cup as a player and owner.
Personal Life
Lemieux grew up listening to a lot of classical music, especially Bach’s piano compositions. Led Zeppelin, a rock group, has also been mentioned by him as a favorite. Lemieux is a fluent French and English speaker.
Lauren, Stephanie, Melanie, and Austin are the couple’s four children; Lemieux wed Nathalie Asselin on June 27, 1997.
Lemieux received a Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis in December 2015. He started therapy right away and declared himself cancer-free in July 2017.
Real Estate
Mario Lemieux was reportedly still attempting to sell a $22 million property in Quebec in 2018. In truth, this property is much larger than what the word “mansion” can encompass; “castle” would be a better term.
The house has 50 rooms, 17 fireplaces, and 17,000 square feet of living area. It also has a land footprint of 5.25 acres. There are also four garages, a spa, and a wine cellar. “Château Fleur de Lys” is the name of the place.
Lemieux resides in the Sewickley Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh. He bought a 3,500-acre ranch in Cranberry Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, in 1998. It boasts an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course and a private lake.
Why is Mario Lemieux famous?
Mario Lemieux, a Canadian hockey player, was frequently compared to greats like Wayne Gretzky and Guy Lafleur because of his speed and dexterity. Lemieux is one of the first athletes in professional sports to purchase his former team after retiring.
