Upon returning to civilian life, Russo began working as a bouncer and soon became involved in the New York underworld.
He earned a reputation as a fierce fighter and was often hired by the Mafia to settle disputes. In the early 1980s, Mad Dog met John Gotti, the boss of the Gambino crime family, and became his bodyguard.
In 1986, Mad Dog was arrested for his involvement in a murder-for-hire plot. He agreed to cooperate with the authorities and testified against Gotti at his trial. As a result of his testimony, Gotti was sentenced to life in prison.
After serving two years in prison, Russo was released and returned to his life of crime. In the 1990s, he became involved in the drug trade and was arrested several times.
In 2003, he was convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to 20 years.

Russo is the sole child of Anthony Michael “Tony” (1931-2013) and Vera “Molly” Russo, both of Flushing, Queens. On May 6, 1995, Russo married Jeanne Lavelle, and they had four children: Timmy, Kiera, Colin, and Patrick.
On December 30, 2020, Colin made his sports radio personalities debut on WFAN in his father’s former time slot, co-hosting alongside Sonny Carton, son of long-time presenter Craig Carton.
He now lives in New Canaan, Connecticut. He has been a lifetime supporter of the San Francisco Giants.
