From 1964 to 1965, Luft played the role of Lavender Brown in the musical comedy series That Girl. She appeared in the 1967 movie The Pleasure Seekers with Ann-Margret and Carol Lynley.
In the 1970s, Luft had several cameo roles in movies such as I Wanna Hold Your Hand (1978), Grease 2 (1982), and Fantasy Island (1978). She made her Broadway debut in the 1979 play Rockabye Hamlet where she played the role of Ophelia.
She also played the role of Anita in the 1983 Broadway revival of West Side Story. Luft continued to appear in various films and shows throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
In 1992, she appeared in the series Roseanne. The following year, she made an appearance in the film Trapped in Paradise.
In 2004, Luft starred in the TV movie Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows which earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie. The same year, she appeared in the film Catch a Falling Star.
