Long was born in the Virginia town of Ivy. In Charlottesville, Virginia, he attended St. Anne’s-Belfield School. He was a baseball and football player. He was chosen to play in the 2008 US Army All-American Bowl.

He was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 23rd round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, but did not sign and honored his commitment to Florida State University.

As a senior, he was named the Associated Press Virginia Player of the Year after recording 96 tackles and 11 sacks on defense, while also rushing for 1,358 yards and 28 touchdowns on offense.
