In April 1956, David Edward Kelley was born in Waterville, Maine. The United States Ice Hockey Hall of Fame includes his father Jack Kelley. He grew up in Belmont, Massachusetts, and went to Belmont High School there.
He attended Princeton University after high school, where he majored in political science and graduated with a bachelor’s degree. He created a play based on the Bill of Rights as his senior thesis. Each change represented a character. He graduated from Princeton and the Boston University Law School with a Juris Doctor.
He contributed writing to the Legal Follies, a legal-themed sketch comedy ensemble, when he was attending law school. He worked for a Boston law firm after graduating from law school, handling real estate and minor criminal matters.
As a side pastime, 27-year-old Kelley started writing a legal thriller in 1983. He converted the tale into a screenplay, which producers finally optioned and produced into the Judd Nelson movie “From the Hip” in 1987.
Success
For a brand-new NBC series he was developing called “L.A. Law,” producer Steven Bochco was looking for bright, young legal writers in 1986. Bochco offered David a position as a staff writer on the series after reading his From the Hip script. David originally refrained from leaving his law position because of concern that this journey into TV writing wouldn’t persist.
David received a promotion to story editor and co-producer for the second season of the program. He was appointed executive producer in 1989. Kelley won two Emmys for Outstanding Writing in a Dramatic Series for his work on L.A. Law.
“Dougie Houser, M.D.” was co-created in 1992 by Bochco and Kelley. They co-founded David E. Kelley Productions in the same year, and it soon signed a deal with CBS television.
“Picket Fences,” the first show produced by David E. Kelley Productions, ran for four seasons and 88 episodes. 14 Emmys were awarded to Picket Fences.
Chicago Hope, a CBS television program he established in 1994, eventually aired 141 episodes over six seasons.
David’s contract with CBS expired in 1995, and he then agreed to a new, longer contract with 20th Century Fox. The Practice and “Ally McBeal” were the first two programs produced under the Fox contract. Over eight seasons, ABC broadcast 168 episodes of The Practice. In its five seasons, Fox broadcast 112 episodes of Ally McBeal.
He produced “Boston Public” in 2000, which ran for four seasons and 81 episodes. He produced “Boston Legal” in 2004, which ran for five seasons and 101 episodes.
David secured a new production contract with Warner Bros. Television in 2008 after leaving Fox.
He created the critically praised HBO drama “Big Little Lies” in 2017 after creating the series “Goliath” for Amazon Studios in 2015.
