Wallace grew up in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, near the Bedford-Stuyvesant border. In middle school, he excelled academically and won numerous English awards.
He began dealing drugs when he was 12 years old. As a teenager, he began rapping to entertain people on street corners and in local groups. He went to the same high school as future rappers Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, and DMX, Westinghouse Career and Technical High School.
He dropped out of school at the age of 17 and became immersed in the world of drug dealing, which resulted in several arrests. He was imprisoned for nine months in 1991 on a crack-sale charge.
Career
After being released from prison, he recorded a demo titled “Microphone Murderer” under the alias “Biggie Smalls.” The tape eventually found its way to The Source’s editor, who included Biggie in the magazine’s Unsigned Hype column.
The demo tape was also sent to Sean “Puffy” Combs, an A&R rep/producer at Uptown Records. Biggie signed a contract with Combs and arranged for him to appear on a Heavy D & the Boyz song.
In 1993, Combs was fired from Uptown. He would soon launch his own record label, Bad Boy Records. Wallace joined Combs at the new company the same day it was founded. Biggie’s career took off after he appeared on Mary J. Blige’s single “Real Love” (remix).
As a featured artist on other people’s songs, he continued to have success. In July 1994, he appeared alongside LL Cool J and Busta Rhymes on a remix to Craig Mack’s “Flava in Ya Ear.”
Ready to Die, Biggie’s debut solo studio album, was released on September 13, 1994. It peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard 200. Big Poppa and One More Chance, both from the album, charted at No. 1. In 1995, the latter sold 1.1 million copies.
Notorious B.I.G. began work on his second album in September 1995 and continued for 18 months. He split his time between New York City, Trinidad, and Los Angeles. Concurrently, he was working on Michael Jackson’s ninth studio album, HIStory.
Biggie’s success raised the profile of East Coast hip hop at a time when West Coast hip hop dominated the mainstream music scene. The rivalry between the two coasts quickly escalated. Wallace’s first child, T’yanna, was born on August 8, 1993, with his long-term girlfriend, his high school sweetheart named Jan, but the couple had already divorced.
On August 4, 1994, Biggie married R&B singer Faith Evans. The couple met at a Bad Boy photoshoot and reportedly married just days later. On October 29, 1996, Evans gave birth to Biggie’s son, Christopher C.J Wallace Jr. Evans became embroiled in the East Coast vs. West Coast rivalry following allegations that she had an affair with Tupac Shakur.
Wallace and Evans were separated but not legally divorced at the time of his death.
Death
Wallace visited California in February 1997 to promote his second album and to film a video for the album’s lead single, Hypnotize. He’d hired security detail because he was concerned about his own safety.
On March 9, 1997, outside of a Los Angeles museum, Biggie was the target of a drive-by shooting six months after Tupac was killed in the same manner. He had earlier that night presented Toni Braxton with an award at the Soul Train Music Awards.
Wallace was hit by four bullets fired by an unidentified man. Biggie’s entourage rushed him to Cedars-Sinai, but he was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m., at the age of 24. On March 18, 350 mourners attended his funeral in Manhattan, including artists Queen Latifah, Busta Rhymes, Salt-N-Pepa, and many more.
