He spent two years playing for the Volunteers before being selected in the second round of the 1979 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets. King averaged 22.0 points per game while spending four seasons with the Nets.
King was exchanged for the Golden State Warriors in 1983. In his debut season with the Warriors, he averaged 26.3 points per game, earning him an All-Star berth.
He was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player the following season after averaging 25.8 points per game (MVP). Over the following few seasons, he remained one of the league’s best scorers, but in the late 1980s, injuries put an end to his professional career.
Early in the 1990s, King made a return and once more ranked among the league’s best scorers. During this time, he played for a number of groups, including the New York Knicks and the Washington Bullets. In 1997, he left the NBA for good.
2013 saw King become a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Personal Life
King was arrested for cocaine possession while playing for the Jazz, and the NBA later suspended him. In the same season, Terry Furlow, a teammate, died in a car accident; An autopsy showed cocaine in his blood.
He was also charged with multiple counts of sexual assault on January 1, 1980, and was ultimately found guilty of “attempted sexual coercion.”
