Angelo Dundee was born in August 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died in February 2012. From 1960 through 1981, he was most recognized for his collaboration with Muhammad Ali.

Early years
Angelo Mirena was born on August 30, 1921, in Philadelphia, to recent Italian immigrant parents, Filomena Cianelli, a mother of seven children, and Angelo Merenda, a railway construction worker from Roggiano Gravina. (At the time of immigration, his father’s name was incorrectly written as Mirena.)
In the early 1940s, he changed his surname to ‘Dundee,’ after US champion boxer Johnny Dundee.
He served as an aircraft mechanic in the United States Air Force during WWII, including an active military tour to England in 1944-45.
His first experience as a cornerman was in United States Air Force boxing tournaments, and after leaving the Air Force in late 1945 at the end of the war, he went to New York City and worked as a bucket-guy at Stillman’s Gym as an apprenticeship as a boxing trainer.
Boxing Trainer Career
Dundee moved to Miami Beach, Florida, after finishing his apprenticeship in New York City, and started the “Fifth Street Gym” with his brother.
When Carmen Basilio fought Tony DeMarco for the world welterweight gold in 1955, and Sugar Ray Robinson for the world middleweight crown in 1957, Dundee became the first World Champion for whom he served as a cornerman.
