Alex Trebek’s Overview

Early life

George Alexander Trebek was born in Sudbury, Ontario, a city in Canada, on July 22, 1940. His Ukrainian immigrant father, George Edward Trebek, and Franco-Ontarian mother – Lucille Lagacé, raised him in a bilingual home where he spoke both English and French.

He attended the institution that would eventually become known as Sudbury Secondary School after graduating from Sudbury High Institution (now known as Sudbury Secondary School).

He graduated with a degree in philosophy from the University of Ottawa in 1961 after four years of study there. In the same year, he began his career in television after being employed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

He first appeared on CBC television and radio as a stand-in for professional presenters before becoming a regular, reading the national news and covering a variety of special events. He began working for the CBC in the 1980s.

Hosting Profession

Trebek began his career as a presenter in 1963 when he was hired by the Canadian television program “Music Hop.” He also hosted the Canadian version of the high school game show “Reach for the Top” in 1966 and the CBC afternoon game program Strategy from 1967 to 1970.

He uprooted his life and moved to the United States in 1974 after earning the host role on NBC’s new game show, “The Wizard of Odds.”

He was the host of many game shows during the 1970s and 1980s, including NBC’s “High Rollers” and “The $128,000 Question” (season two) and CBS’s “Double Dare.”

Although “Battlestars” only aired for a brief six months on NBC from October 1981 to April 1982, Trebek was the show’s host for its whole. When his stint as “Pitfall” host ended, he could not collect his compensation since the production company, Catalena Productions, had gone bankrupt.

Trebek and game show media mogul Merv Griffin filmed two episodes of a revival of “Jeopardy!” and the show was taken up when they aired. When it premiered in 1984, he was cast as the show’s host, and that’s the role for which he’s been recognized most widely throughout his long career.

Art Fleming, the show’s first host, passed up the chance to take over the role when presenter Alex Trebek bowed out, citing creative differences.

Resurrecting “Jeopardy!” has been very successful, as seen by the show’s unprecedented 33 Daytime Emmy wins. In 2014, Trebek presented episode 6,829 of “Jeopardy!”, making him the gameshow host with the most episodes ever.

He accomplished this feat by hosting more episodes of “The Price is Right” than Bob Barker, the previous record holder for most episodes presented by a single host.

In 1991, he was the first American to preside over the hosting of three separate game shows (“To Tell the Truth,” “Classic Concentration,” and “Jeopardy!”).

Personal Life

Trebek married the entrepreneur Elaine Callie in 1974. The couple divorced in 1981 after a poor marriage and the absence of any children.

In 1990, he wed real estate project manager Jean Currivan, and they had two kids. He successfully finished the naturalization procedure in 1998.

He received a stage IV pancreatic cancer diagnosis in March 2019 and underwent intensive therapy. As of March 2020, he has completed a full year of cancer treatment. On November 8, 2020, Alex was 80 years old, and died in his courageous battle with cancer.

In a 2014 podcast interview with The Nerdist, Trebek said he donated a significant portion of his yearly income to charitable causes.

In 1998, he granted the Santa Monica Conservancy access to his 74-acre Hollywood Hills property. The generous donation expanded the size of the public park.

Bicyclists and pedestrians have already made extensive use of the trails. To start the Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue at the University of Ottawa, he offered the institution $5 million in 2016.

His alma institution has received a total of $7.5 million in donations from him, and he has been generous with them.
