He was a tremendously gifted athlete who helped his team to a 34-0 record and the top spot in the country. Parade magazine awarded him “Player of the Year” in 1974.
He participated in collegiate basketball at Notre Dame. He had a 20-point and 10-rebound average in his first season. In 1976, he was recognized as the “National College Player of the Year.” After his junior year, he made himself eligible for the NBA Draft.
Career
Adrian played basketball while he was a student at DeMatha Catholic High School. He attended Notre Dame after graduating, where he played forward from 1973 to 1976.
He held records at the school and was the team’s scoring leader for the majority of his tenure there. As a result of his accomplishments, he was named to the first team All-American consensus for two years.
He was also instrumental in the Fighting Irish’s 1974 victory over UCLA, which ended their 88-game winning run. Additionally, he was a member of the 1976 US Olympic gold-medal-winning squad.
The Buffalo Braves selected Adrian as the sixth overall choice in the 1976 draft. He won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 1977 for his efforts, which marked the beginning of his rise in wealth.
After being traded to the NBA Pacers, he moved to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he lasted for a season until being dealt to the Utah Jazz.
