Early life and career

Hailing from Rochester, New York, Mary Grace Canfield was the second born of Hildegard (née Jacobson) and Hubert Canfield. She spent her childhood in Pittsford, New York, accompanied by her older sister Constance who was two years her senior.

In between 1952 and 1964, she made her mark on small theatre companies and regional theatre, though her Broadway plays rarely lasted more than a month. Nevertheless, her Broadway credits included noteworthy performances in The Waltz of the Toreadors and The Frogs of Spring.

In March 1954, Canfield made her debut on the small screen, portraying Frances in the “Native Dancer” episode of Goodyear Playhouse. She subsequently made numerous other television appearances before landing a role as housekeeper Amanda Allison on The Hathaways in 1961-1962.

On the fateful November 25, 1963, Mary Grace, the “ugly” cousin of Thelma Lou, was due to appear on an episode of The Andy Griffith Show for an arranged blind date with Gomer Pyle (Jim Nabors).

Unfortunately, the episode was never aired due to the breaking news coverage of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy three days earlier.

Green Acres

The beloved character of Ralph Monroe, the bumbling carpenter from Hooterville, was popularised by Canfield on the hit comedy series Green Acres, delivering her iconic “Howdy Doody!” greeting over the show’s six-season run from 1965 to 1971.

She made an appearance in more than 40 episodes of the show, cementing her status as a memorable television star. In a 2006 interview, she expressed her slight discontent in being remembered for her role as Ralph in the 1990 TV movie Return to Green Acres.

She explained that it upset her, “only in the sense that it was so easy and undemanding. It’s being known for something easy to do instead of something you worked hard to achieve.”

Other roles

In 1966, the actress Alice Canfield starred on four episodes of the hit show Bewitched as Harriet Kravitz, sister to Abner Kravitz.

Taking over from the late Alice Pearce, who had previously played Abner’s wife Gladys Kravitz, Canfield’s guest-appearance came just before the show’s iconic new character of Mrs. Kravitz, played by Sandra Gould, was cast.

Canfield and Lucille Wall captivated General Hospital fans in the early 1970s, alternating in the role of Lucille March. On the big screen, Canfield starred in the classic family drama Pollyanna (as “Angelica”), The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, and Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Later life and death

In 2005, Canfield made her final public showing, when she joined her Green Acres co-stars Sid Melton and Frank Cady in honoring the life of Eddie Albert. Sadly, Canfield passed away from lung cancer at the age of 89 on February 15th, 2014 in Santa Barbara, California.
