Lucille Ball Overview: Why is Lucille Ball Famous?

Early Life

On August 6, 1911, Lucille Ball was born in Jamestown, New York. Because of her father’s many moves due to his employment with Bell Telephone, she had a severely disjointed upbringing and spent much of her time with her strict, Puritanical grandparents.

Ball was only three years old when his father, who was only 27 years old, passed away from typhoid disease. When she started performing at age twelve, she fell in love with the theater.

She attempted to make a career in New York theater when still in her late teens while attending the John Murray Anderson School for the Dramatic Arts in New York, where Bette Davis was a classmate.

She performed admirably at first, but her health soon declined, forcing her to halt performing for two years owing to a severe bout of rheumatic fever.

Career

Lucille Ball Career

Ball began her career as a model and later appeared in several minor film roles in the 1930s and 1940s as a contract player for RKO and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios.

She landed her first leading role in the film Too Many Girls (1940) and became a household name during World War II as the comedy relief in a series of comedy films starring the slapstick team of Abbott and Costello.

After the war, Ball starred in two feature films opposite Bing Crosby—My Favorite Husband (1948) and Fancy Pants (1950).

In 1951, Ball became the first woman to run a major television studio, Desilu Productions, which produced much popular television series, including Mission: Impossible and Star Trek.

Ball did not always play a comedic role; she appeared in dramatic television series such as General Electric Theater and Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

In 1962, Ball portrayed Marilyn Monroe in the episode “Lucy Meets the Queen” on The Lucy Show. One of her most famous I Love Lucy episodes is “Lucy Does a Commercial”, in which Ball takes over a grape-stomping vat in a winery after being directed to “stomp grapes” in a commercial.

The episode aired on October 15, 1951, and received a Nielsen rating of 43.3, making it the highest-rated episode of any television series up to that time.

Due to health problems, ball’s career began to decline in the late 1960s. In 1986, she died of a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm at the age of 77.

In 1961, Ball married Gary Morton, who remained by her side until her passing in 1989.
