Her father, Robert Thomas Saunders, served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and rose to the rank of group captain before joining British Aerospace, while her mother, Barbara Jane Saunders, taught biology. She is the youngest of three brothers.
Due to her father’s military service, Saunders changed schools frequently during her childhood. She attended boarding school from age five to eighteen, and then St Paul’s Girls’ School, an independent school in West London.
Saunders was accepted to the Central School of Speech and Theater in London in 1977 for a programme for drama instructors, where she met Dawn French, her future comedy partner. Without ever having met, French and Saunders were both from the RAF, had grown up on the same base, and even shared a closest buddy.
Saunders was surprised to learn that she was enrolled in a teacher-training program because her mother had completed the application. When Saunders decided against applying to an Oxbridge university, her mother was upset.
Following their initial conflict in college, French and Saunders cohabited in a flat. French has remarked on Saunders’ filthy habits while living together, saying: “She had a room at the top of the house when we lived together in Chalk Farm.

Jennifer Saunders has had an illustrious career spanning nearly four decades. She began her career in the early 80s as a member of The Comic Strip, alongside her best friend and comedy partner Dawn French.
The two then went on to write and star in their own sketch show, French and Saunders, for which they jointly received a BAFTA Fellowship in 2009.
In the 1990s, Saunders found success writing and playing the character Edina Monsoon in the sitcom Absolutely Fabulous.
She has also ventured into film, voicing Queen Elizabeth II in the 2015 animated film Minions, and Miss Nana Noodleman in the 2016 animated film Sing. In 2023, she starred in Death on the Nile as Marie Van Schuyler.
