How To Make A Homemade Drum
How to Make a Balloon Drum
Step 1. Locate a suitable pot.
To make the drum’s body, find an old pot. It’s recommended to use a pot diameter of fewer than 12 inches.
Step 2. Select the appropriate balloon size.
Because the balloon will be the drum’s head, it must be tight but large enough to fit around the pot’s top. If the balloon is too little when you drum, it may be too tight and break.
- For pots 10 to 12 inches in diameter, a 24-inch balloon works well.
- For pots under 10 inches in diameter, a 16-inch balloon is ideal.
Step 3. Remove the balloon’s mouthpiece.
Cut the mouthpiece off the balloon with scissors. Make sure you only cut the mouth section of the balloon and not the body.
Step 4. Stretch and secure the balloon on the pot.
Place the pot between your legs or have a friend hold it for you. Place the balloon over one edge of the pot and carefully stretch it across the top. Stretch multiple rubber bands onto the pot sitting on top of the balloon to keep it in place.
Step 5. Strike your drum.
Play your balloon drum with light wooden sticks. Drumming on a balloon drum is easy with chopsticks, little wooden dowels, or pencils.
How To Make A DIY Drum By Using Coffee Tin
Step 1. Cover the coffee tin with construction paper.
Remove the lid and label from the coffee tin first. Cut a piece of construction paper to fit the can using the label as a guide. Using craft glue, adhere the construction paper on the coffee tin.
If you can’t use the label as a guide, measure the width of the label area on the tin with a ruler. On the construction paper, draw a rectangle the same width and length as the piece of paper. You can trim out any overlap.
Step 2. Attach the cloth to the coffee tin’s top.
Glue a square of cloth to the top of the coffee container with a hot glue gun. Trim the excess fabric away from the adhesive, leaving about one to two inches.
The fabric square should be near twice the size of the tin’s top. If the tin lid is approximately 3×3 inches, the fabric square should be 6×6 inches.
Step 3. Reinstall the lid.
Replace the lid on the coffee container to seal the fabric and provide a solid surface for the kid to drum on. By pasting a ribbon over the edge of the lid, you may conceal it.
Step 4. Dress up the drum.
Decorate the drum with markers, stickers, feathers, or other decorative materials. Draw patterns on the paper and hang feathers from the lid of the coffee tin. Make the drum as unique as possible by using your imagination.
Step 5. Get some drum sticks.
To use as drumsticks, find light wooden sticks—drum on your new drum with wooden dowels, chopsticks, or unsharpened pencils.
Dumbek Construction (African Drum)
Step 1. A cardboard carpet tube and a plastic flower container are required.
A cardboard carpet tube and a plastic flower pot are stacked on this drum. Any carpet store will give you a complimentary cardboard carpet tube.
The carpet tube should have a diameter of three to four inches.
The flower pot’s bottom should be four inches in diameter.
Step 2. Locate a beach ball.
To create the head of this drum, you’ll need thick, pliable plastic. A beach ball works well, but any thick, flexible plastic would suffice.
A balloon is far too light.
Step 3. Cut the carpet tube into pieces.
Cut the carpet tube to 12 inches long with scissors or a small handsaw. To ensure that the tube attaches flat to the flower container, cut it straight rather than at an angle.
Step 4. Cut the beach ball into a square.
To begin, cut the plastic blow tube from the beach ball with scissors, then cut the ball open so it can rest flat. Cut a square the same width as the beach ball out of the beach ball.
This will cover the top of the flower container and leave enough to wrap around the sides.
Step 5. Embroider the plastic square in a hoop.
Get an embroidery hoop the same size as the flower pot’s top. Disassemble the embroidery hoop and stretch the beach ball square onto the embroidery hoop’s bottom, stretching as you go.
Replace the top of the embroidery hoop on the bottom, and tighten the beach ball into the hoop.
The drum head is this.
Step 6. Place the drum head on top of the flower pot.
Use packaging tape to secure the drum head to the top of the flower container. Apply enough tape to the drum head to adhere it to the flower container.
Step 7. Connect the carpet tube to the flower pot. Place the flower pot on the cardboard tube’s top. Secure the flower pot to the cardboard tube with packing tape.
Step 8. Dress up the drum.
Decorate your new African drum with beautiful material. You can conceal the packing tape by wrapping it with yarn or string. For a unique, traditional look, add feathers and beads.

Are You Able To Make Your Own Drums?
You may also make a drum set out of plastic bottles. Arrange the bottles in the shape of a drum set using smaller bottles (12 or 16-ounce bottles). Fill each bottle with a varied amount of water to get various sound tones.
Is It Less Expensive To Make Your Own Drum Set?
The cost of constructing your own is $1,369, which includes shipping.
As you can see, building custom vs. buying bespoke is less expensive. The true financial risk is that you’ll want to produce others right away after you’ve made your first drum!
Making your drum may be a rewarding experience, and if you put in the time and effort, you’ll end up with a unique and beautiful instrument. The best part is that you won’t require many supplies. Most of the materials are around $10, and you probably already have all of the tools you’ll need in your garage.
